SAN ANGELO, TX-- A high speed chase that started in Ballinger ended in a residential neighborhood in San Angelo on Wednesday.
The chase began in Ballinger, when a subject was spotted in a green Kia Soul that was suspected of being stolen. The Ballinger police chased the Soul halfway to San Angelo where the Chief of Police for the Miles Police Department took over. The Miles Chief radioed ahead to the Tom Green Country Sheriff's Office, and deputies prepared to lay spikes across U.S. 67 near Howard College. As the Miles Chief in pursuit of the Soul approached the city limits, TGCSO deputies and Texas DPS were assisting in the chase. Sources said the Soul never really hit a top speed of more than 75 mph.
The car rustler may have known spikes were being deployed because he diverted off U.S. 67 onto Old Ballinger Highway and blew past the city dump until he reached Bell St. and went west on Hughes.
A Tom Green County deputy re-acquired the Soul on Bell St. and pursued it in a winding path through the numbered streets of San Angelo. The suspect was trapped on 13th St. just east of Volney with a deputy behind him, the Miles Police Chief in front, and a DPS trooper and San Angelo police behind the Chief.
Noting he was surrounded, the suspect surrendered himself without incident. He was handed over to the Miles Police Chief who transported him to be booked into the Runnels County Jail. The suspected rustler was described as a white male in his early 20s. The chase ended at approximately 3:40 p.m. Wednesday.
