SAN ANGELO, TX —The San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo Association (SASSRA) announced today that it was selected to be on the final ballot for “Large Indoor Rodeo of the Year.” A notification of the nomination from the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) was received Friday.
The SASSRA was nominated in 2016, along with the Denver, Colorado; Fort Worth; and Black Hills, South Dakota.
The San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo won last year.
With the exception of the South Dakota rodeo, the competitors are 20 to 30 times the size of our city. "The support of the community, sponsors, fans and contestants makes this rodeo, the rodeo, to attend," said Erwin Schwartz, Jr., President of the Stock Show and Rodeo Association. "The reputation of excitement and world-renowned contestants places the event in a group of exclusive category."

The San Antonio rodeo has won the honor every year since 2005. The Houston rodeo has won 9 times since 1991. Black Hills won in 2002 and 2003. Denver’s rodeo won three years, in 1996, 2000, and 2001.
San Angelo’s rodeo is the only committee nominated last year that hasn’t been awarded the honor.

“If you review the ballot and look down the list of the nominees, in most categories it’s a list of outstanding contractors and entertainers that have performed at the San Angelo Rodeo," says Executive Director Justin Jonas. "This speaks to the commitment by the Association to provide the best product we can for the fans of San Angelo."
Justin Rumford, the barrelman and head bullfighter for San Angelo’s rodeo in 2017, was also named the 2016 PRCA Rodeo Clown the Year. SASSR announcer Boyd Polhamus is a four-time PRCA rodeo announcer of the year. Polhamus was backed up by the legendary Bob Tallman this year. He is a seven-time recipient of that honor.
The preliminary voting was cast by electronic ballot from PRCA contestants, PRCA contract personnel, and other PRCA rodeo committees in August and the field has been narrowed down to this final ballot within the category.
The winner will be announced at the annual PRCA Banquet held in Las Vegas, Nevada on Dec. 6.
