Exhibit Celebrates Fort Concho's 150th year

SAN ANGELO, TX — To celebrate Fort Concho’s upcoming 150th anniversary date on Dec. 4, its Collections Department has created a special display, “I Was Once Here,” a selection of personal and military artifacts used by the military and civilians at the fort in its active years from 1867-89.

Housed in the Barracks 1 Visitor Center at 630 S. Oakes St., the display features clothing, weaponry, personal items and other artifacts that “were once here” at the fort a century-and-a half ago. Organized by Curator of History Cory Robinson, these objects, representing a tiny fraction of the fort’s 20,000 catalogued objects, bring to life the often forgotten men, women and children whose efforts helped found San Angelo.

Admission to the display is free. It is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays and 1 p.m.-5 p.m. Sundays. It will remain on display the rest of the year, including during Christmas at Old Fort Concho Dec. 1-3.

A special opening reception will be from 5 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28. Robinson and other staff will be available to answer questions and speak about the objects. The reception is also free.
