SAN ANGELO, TX-- This Friday, throughout Texas, high school football fans will pile in to the stands to root on their team as the 2017 season begins. For some schools, however, the battle began last week when Hurricane Harvey devastated most of the Texas coast.
However, schools like Refugio and Rockport took a direct uppercut from Harvey and their seasons remain in question. Most Houston area schools have canceled games for Friday, Sept. 1 due to the record flooding from the storm.
With a call for help coming from the schools and towns affected from the disaster, the Texas High School Coaches Association and the Texas High School Coaches Education Foundation will step to the plate to help those in need.
Some schools who take the field this weekend will be accepting donations and giving the proceeds raised from the games to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Efforts. The Lake View Chiefs, who take on Andrews High School at home this Friday, will partake in the fundraiser, according to a Thursday press release from San Angelo ISD Director of Communications Derrick Jackson.
"We will be accepting donations at the gates of the Lake View vs Andrews game," Jackson said in the release. "100% of the proceeds will be directly sent to the Texas Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund."
All teams participating in the fundraiser will donate to the Texas Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.
"It is now more important than ever for us to make a strong effort to help our family, friends and neighbors that have been devastated in the wake of Hurricane Harvey," the THSCA said about the statewide fundraiser. "Your contributions will help revive and rebuild those communities who have felt the effects of this horrible storm."
The Chiefs' game will kick off at 7:30 p.m. against Andrews Friday night.
