High Speed Police Chase Through San Angelo Ends with Crash into Residence

SAN ANGELO, TX — A high-speed chase with Tom Green County deputies in pursuit of a red mid-sized SUV through most of San Angelo ended with a loud crash into a San Angelo resident’s home Saturday night.

According to radio calls, at around 2 a.m. this morning, Sheriff’s deputies chased the SUV from far north Tom Green County on U.S. 277 to Bryant Blvd., across to Washington Ave., the back across the Bryants to Randolph. The chase continued southbound on Randolph St. The SUV made a wide, fast turn eastbound onto Ave. L, across the Concho River bridge, and continued for a little ways further until losing control attempting a left turn at Sellers St. The SUV hopped a curb, running through the front yard, ramming the corner of a home on the east side Sellers and Ave. L.

About eight police cars and Sheriff’s cruisers were involved in the chase.

After the crash into the residence, two occupants of the SUV were quickly apprehended. From observation, it was a male and female. Over the radio, police called in the driver’s name, Fernando Ramirez.

Ramirez was apprehended in May for possession of more than 4 grams and less than 200 grams of heroin with the intent to deliver it. His charges were enhanced because of a previous conviction of assaulting a peace officer in 2013.

Ramirez’s bail bondsman Freedom/Libertad Bail Bonds had just notified the courts that it was revoking his bond, $40,000, because Ramirez had not lived up to reporting agreements between himself and the bail bondsman. He is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 23 for a pretrial hearing for the possession and delivery of heroin charges.

After the chase and crash, sheriff’s deputies arrested him for the warrant for his arrest and tacked on charges of evading arrest in a motor vehicle and on foot. He also had a warrant for his arrest from the Tom Green County Court at Law for marijuana possession. According to jail records, this was the 19th  time Ramirez has been arrested in Tom Green County since 2008. He is 26 years old.

Riding with Ramirez was 32-year-old Crystal Dawn Munoz. She was arrested for evading arrest and for an outstanding warrant.

San Angelo police, sheriff’s deputies, detectives inspected the crashed vehicle presumably for drugs. A K9 unit was called in. While the search ensued, both suspects complained of injuries. An ambulance was called to the scene, but, according to the radio calls, both refused treatment.

The scene was cleared some time after 3 a.m.

The Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office is the investigating agency. We did not learn the reason for the deputies' attempt to stop Ramirez in the northern part of the county.
