After Recklessness Causes Her Infant's Skull to Fracture, One Woman is Back in Jail

SAN ANGELO, TX -- On Wednesday, 20 people were arrested in Tom Green County. One of the more serious charges was for a woman who violated her probation resulting from Injury of a Young Child charges. 

Alexis Rickles, 21, is charged with Injury to a Child, Elderly or Disabled Individual after she caused a one-year-old female baby to suffer a skull fracture when the infant was dropped on the floor. The offense happened on Feb. 26, 2015, the same day as the victim's first birthday. 

On the day of the offense, a San Angelo Police Department (SAPD) Officer was dispatched to the 2700 block of A&M Ave. for reports of a physical altercation between Rickles and co-defendant Christopher Burney. Burney, the father of the victim, was holding the child during the altercation, according to court documents. 

The responding officer recalled that Burney dropped the victim as a result of the physical altercation. The officer further stated that the victim seemed to be fine at the time and was released in to the custody of Rickles as Burney was arrested for outstanding warrants. 

Later that evening, SAPD officers returned to the residence for the reports of an assault victim. Rickles told police that the child had a large knot on her head and that she was concerned for the victim's welfare. 

The child was transported to Shannon Hospital for treatment. Following a medical scan, it was determined that the victim had a skull fracture and was bleeding in the brain. The child was taken to Shannon Medical Center for medical treatment. 

Though Rickels did not drop her baby, both Rikles and Burney were charged as "their reckless actions during a physical altercation caused the victims injures," the defendants complaint reads. 

Rickles and Burney were both arrested on a $50,000 bond for the offense. 

Rickles pled guilty to the charge and was issued deferred adjudication on March 29, 2016, placing her on community supervision for a period of 10 years. Burney was dismissed of the charge on Oct. 28, 2016 after 119th Judicial District Court  ruled that there was "good and sufficient reason to authorize the dismissal," according to court documents.

The State field a motion to revoke probation for Rickles on June 21, 2016 following numerous violations of her probation. These violations include, theft, use of methamphetamine, and failure to complete the monthly requirements for her community service.

Rickles appeared in court yesterday before 51st Judicial District Judge Barbra Walther with the intention of taking a plea of not true to the motion to revoke. However, court documents detailed that Rickles and her attorney Brian Raymond chose to move forward with a plea of true to the violations of her probation.

Rikles plea of true was accepted by the court, and her probation was revoked. Judge Walther issued a 10 year suspended sentence, which subsequently places Rickles on a 10 year probation. She was booked into the Tom Green County Jail at 12:05 p.m. on Wednesday with no bond. 

Of the 20 arrests made on Wednesday, 8 were arrested for new complaints and 12 were arrested on warrants.
