SAN ANGELO, TX – Raymond Alvarado Jr., 28, sat shackled in an orange jail jumpsuit before 119th District Judge Ben Woodward Friday in one of a number of pre-trial hearings.
Alvarado Jr. is charged with Capital Murder of multiple persons for the fatal shootings of Jimmy Andrew Gonzales and Anthony Michael Martinez, according to court documents.
He is represented by defense attorneys Evan Pierce-Jones and Jenny Henley. Prosecuting District Attorney Allison Palmer and Richard Villarreal represented the State.
About 20 family members and friends sat in the courtroom, most of whom were there on behalf of the victims.
Before the pretrial hearing began, prosecutors and defense attorneys met privately. In open court, Judge Woodward asked the attorneys if they were prepared to submit pretrial motions. Henley and Palmer told the judge they have agreed to meet and discuss the 39 current pretrial motions and see which ones they agreed upon and which ones they would contest.
Woodward agreed that the two sides could meet and come back at another pretrial hearing in September or October to present any contested pretrial motions.
The judge also asked about the status of the DNA testing. Henley said all the physical evidence had been presented for DNA testing; some had been tested but most had not.
Woodward directed the Palmer and Henley get him a list of the pretrial motions they don’t agree upon at least two weeks before the next pretrial hearing. The attorneys agreed to meet that request.
According to earlier LIVE! reports, Alvarado is charged with shooting to death Gonzales and Martinez on September 9, 2016. He allegedly left the state and was apprehended in Lansing, Michigan on December 8, 2016 and returned to Tom Green County and booked into jail on December 22, 2016.
The punishment for Capital Murder is death or life in prison without parole.
