One Dead in Two-Motorcycle Crash on Knickerbocker Road Towards Dove Creek

SAN ANGELO, TX — DPS spokesman Staff Sgt. Justin Baker confirmed one fatality in the crash of two motorcycles on Knickerbocker Road towards Dove Creek early this afternoon.

The two motorcycles, both Harley Davidsons, were operated by each a male and a female driver, Baker reported. “For unknown reasons, one motorcycle driven by the female crashed in the middle of the roadway and the other, the male, crashed far into the field south of the road,” Baker said.

Both motorcyclists were headed west, away from San Angelo, he said.

The male driver, who ended up in the field, was pronounced dead by Tom Green County Justice of the Peace Fred Buck. The female motorcyclist who was found lying in the roadway was transported to Shannon Medical Center onboard the Airmed 1 helicopter ambulance.

Baker said both drivers suffered “serious trauma.” Helmets were discovered at the scene, but DPS is not certain either was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Baker said no witnesses of the actual crash have been found yet. However, shortly after the crash, off-duty and trained first responder medics happened up on the scene and rendered aid.

“It’s a tragic accident,” Baker said. No citations are likely to be issued.

For now, the cause of the crash has investigators puzzled. “We’re going to be working very hard to determine the exact cause of this crash,” Baker said. He noted that the obvious causes are already being looked into. For example, Baker said troopers found no evidence of an animal in the roadway. “A lot of what happened may have to be determined if we can interview the female victim in the hospital,” he said.

Baker said the names of the victims are being withheld pending notification of the next-of-kin.

The crash happened at 12:29 p.m.  in the 10000 block of Knickerbocker Rd. The skies were clear and the roadway dry.
