TEXAS -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched an investigation into findings of Hepatitis A in frozen tuna from Hilo Fish Company.
On May 1, the Hawaii Department of Health notified the FDA of several frozen tuna cubes samples from Indonesia testing positive for the Hepatitis A virus. After further investigation and testing, it was confirmed that potential infected tuna had been imported and distributed to restaurants and retail locations in Texas, California, and Oklahoma. The tuna shipped to New York had not been made available to the public.
On May 18, Hilo Fish Company alerted its customers and distribution partners directly to let them know of the the company's recall of certain tuna products.
Hepatitis A is a contagious liver disease that results from infection with the Hepatitis A virus. It can range in severity from a mild illness lasting a few weeks to a severe illness lasting several months. Hepatitis A can be spread when a person ingests the virus from contaminated food or water. The virus can be easily passed form an infected person to other unvaccinated family members, sexual partners, and close contacts. Symptoms include fatigue, abdominal pain, jaundice, abnormal liver tests, dark urine, and pale stool.
Any unvaccinated person who may have consumed the recalled frozen tuna is at risk of contracting the Hepatitis A virus.
Though the CDC did not list any nearby areas for contaminated tuna, those traveling to north-east Texas in the coming days may want to skip the tuna option. Below is a list of vendors who have been shipped the contaminated tuna:

If you or somebody you love believe they may have been contaminated, please contact your health professional. The Center for Disease Control advises post exposure prophylaxis for anyone unvaccinated and who many have consumed any recalled tuna products in the past two weeks.
