SAN ANGELO, TX – Cancer survivors, including those recently diagnosed and their health care professionals who treat them, reunited today at Shannon Clinic Magdalen for a reception to celebrate life.
Lyndy Stone with Shannon's Marketing Department said that the annual event allows patients and caregivers to celebrate success, “This is the fifth year for the reception. It gives survivors and their families and caregivers a chance to reunite because they develop close relationships during treatment.”
National Cancer Survivors Day was Sunday June 4th but Stone said that the Shannon Oncology team partners with the Regional Cancer Treatment Center to host the Celebrate Life reception the Tuesday after June 4.
Shannon Oncology Master Social Worker Katie Hill believes the celebration is good for survivors and caregivers alike, “It’s a great opportunity to welcome patients back under better circumstances.” “When they are here for treatment it can be a stressful time. Many patients don’t remember much of the conversation after being told they have cancer,” Hill explained.
Hill recommends everyone to do all the cancer screenings suggested including mammograms, colonoscopies, and self examinations to find cancer early. Hill added, “I’ve seen lots of good outcomes. That’s the best part of today’s celebration, many times we don’t see patients after they’ve completed treatment.”
This past June 4 was the 30th annual National Cancer Survivor’s Day. According to the National Cancer Survivor’s Day website, June 4 "is a day that provides an opportunity for all people living with a history of cancer - including America’s 15.5 million cancer survivors – to connect with each other, celebrate milestones, and recognize those who have supported them along the way.”
Shannon’s Celebrate Life reception included cake and soft drinks for all participants. Shannon and the Regional Cancer Treatment Center also gave away inscribed water bottles to those in attendance.
