SAN ANGELO, TX – Billie DeWitt, who was born and raised in San Angelo, is ready to bring her experience and expertise to SMD 6 as their next City Council Member. The Ethicon retiree is ready to make a difference and help her district with the challenges they face in a growing city.
DeWitt worked for Ethicon for 34 years where she worked her way to the top. She started her career as a machine operator and moved her way up until reaching the highest position in the human resources department. She has extensive experience in budget management and leadership experience from leading a team of employees.
“My vision is built on three pillars: people, purpose and progress," DeWitt said.
DeWitt considers the recent development of new businesses on Sherwood Way as one of the biggest issues her district faces. Over the last few months, traffic has been slow and congested near the 5000 block of Sherwood Way as H-E-B is in the process of building a new San Angelo location, however, this has caused the closure of several lanes on the busy street. If elected to SMD 6, DeWitt would like to focus on ensuring that traffic flow is maintained as normal as possible and that drivers do not experience unnecessary delays. For the city as a whole she believes it’s very important to continue the search for a solution that would help the city’s water challenges, especially with the unpredictability of West Texas rainfall. Improving road conditions and working towards upgrading and improving air travel in San Angelo are just some of the issues that Dewitt would like to tackle if elected to the city council.
San Angelo is constantly improving and growing and it’s up to the leaders of the city to make sure the growth and expansion of business is met with quality education for the families that decide to reside in the city. DeWitt considers the city to have an outstanding education system that is seen in the local elementary schools as well as in the hundreds of programs offered at Angelo State University. The opportunity for economic growth, the chance of receiving a quality education, and the friendly citizens of San Angelo are all reasons the city’s population has grown over the last few years and is now above 100,000.
“I think San Angelo is truly an oasis in the West Texas desert.”
If elected DeWitt plans to establish a monthly or bi- town hall meetings that would allow her to connect with their citizens and receive their feedback regarding the actions and decisions taken by City Council. She also hopes to foster community involvement and increase participation in city government.
“I want the citizens to have a voice in what they think they need to make our community better.” DeWitt said, “I want to be their voice.”
DeWitt knows one of the biggest challenges the new city council will face will be overcoming the learning curve that comes with the job, but she is confident that with the help of city employees’, they will all work together.
