SAN ANGELO, TX – ASU’s Spring Commencement ceremony is quickly approaching and ASU has recently announced the 2017 commencement speaker. During their graduation ceremonies, more than 950 graduates will have the opportunity to listen to advise and words of wisdom form Dr. U. Shivraj Sohur, an ASU Alumni and clinician at the Internal Medicine Research Unit of Pfizer Inc.’s Worldwide Research and Development in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Sohur graduated from ASU in 1992 with summa cum laude honors and bachelor’s degrees in chemistry and biology. Sohur continued his education at Vanderbilt University where he earned his M.D and Ph.D. and completed his clinical training in neurology.
Sohur now serves as a faculty member at Harvard Medical School and is an attending neurologist in the Division of Movement Disorders at Massachusetts General Hospital. Sohur specializes in Parkinson’s disease and related disorders. He currently works with the global pharmaceutical company Pfizer Inc.
The Espérance Trébuchet, Mauritius native, is constantly in contact with ASU Honor Students and has granted and supervised internships in his neurology lab at Harvard Medical School for several ASU honors students. Sohur was also named the ASU Alumni Association’s Distinguished Carr Scholar Alumnus in 2000 and helped form the ASU’s Alumni Mentoring Program for Honor Students.
Sohur was an active member during his time as an undergrad at ASU in organizations such as Student Senate, Beta Beta Beta national biology honor society, American Chemical Society, Alpha Chi national honor society, and Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.
The ASU Commencement ceremonies will take place on Saturday, May 13th at the Junell Center. Graduates will be separated into two groups and the ceremonies will begin at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. respectively.
