ASU Launches New Master's Program In English & TESOL

SAN ANGELO, TX – Angelo State University will be debuting a new master’s degree program in the English department this fall. The program is designed for students who are interested in teaching English in the U.S. and abroad.

According to an ASU press release, the program will be available to both international and domestic students who wish to continue down this career path. ASU is home to international students every semester, especially to a large community of Korean students. ASU officers said a master's degree offered in this field would be very beneficial in Asian countries in which companies constantly look for employees who are bilingual and proficient in English.

Those completing their degree at ASU will be prepared to be employed in jobs such as TESOL language instructors for adults or children at schools, universities and businesses in the U.S. and abroad and others.

The degree plan is broken down into 36 credit hours or the equivalent of 12 courses that will include hands-on language teaching practice. Anyone with a bachelor’s degree in English education and English language or English literature can apply. It will also be offered to students with other bachelor’s degrees who have completed at least 24 credit hours of English with at least 12 being in advanced courses.

The deadline to apply for the 2017 fall semester will be June 10 for international students and July 15 for everyone else.

“Our faculty recently developed a new undergraduate concentration in English language learning and linguistics that has attracted many international students interested in teaching English abroad,” said Dr. Laurence Musgrove, chair of the Department of English and Modern Languages. “With ASU’s new and expanding recruitment efforts in Asia, this undergraduate program laid the foundation for developing the new graduate program in TESOL.”
