Friday, just after 1:00 a.m., San Angelo Police Officer K. Lane attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle near the 300 block of W. Avenue L. and Koeingheim.
The vehicle pulled into the Stripes convenience store parking lot and continued around to the Denny’s parking lot before coming to a stop. When the vehicle stopped, the driver’s side door opened and the driver ran away towards the Cross Key Apartments.
Officer K. Lane pursued the fleeing driver and observed the driver throw an item to the ground as he ran away. Although Officer Lane lost sight of the driver, he relayed the suspect’s description and direction of travel to responding officers.
A perimeter was quickly established and SAPD K9 Officer H. Miller and his partner, Police Service Dog Thor, arrived to track the suspect.
Thor led the officers to the east side of the complex where the suspect, later identified as Mark Anthony Flores (DOB 03-25-83) of San Angelo, was observed lying down in the bed of a pickup truck. Flores was taken into custody without incident.
When Officers retraced the path Flores ran during his attempted escape, they located several small plastic baggies, some of which contained a crystal like substance that tested positive for the presence of methamphetamine. Flores was subsequently charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance PG1 (4g-200g), Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Evading Arrest, and an outstanding County Warrant.
A passenger, identified as Matthew F. Martinez (DOB 10-27-80), stayed inside the vehicle when Flores fled. Martinez was arrested for an outstanding Felony Warrant.
Flores and Martinez were both transported to a Tom Green County Jail.
