Abilene Man Booked for Sending Counterfeit Checks to Africa

ABILENE, TX- On Tuesday, Nov. 22, the Abilene Police Department Fraud Unit, with the assistance of the Cyber Crimes Unit and Ballinger Police Department, arrested 56-year-old Jefferey Lathan Davis for identify theft.

According to an Abilene Police press release. Davis was involved in manufacturing and distributing of counterfeit checks with stolen account numbers. Those checks were sent to Nigeria, Ghana and Egypt.

"The transfers occurred through the U.S. Postal Service and wire transfers," said Abilene Police officials. "He was found in possession of just under $2,000 and an $1,800 cashier's check to be wire transferred overseas."

As of now, the case is still under investigation by APD. The case will be forwarded to the Taylor County District Attorney's Office for consideration of charges.

Abilene news source KTXS reported, “Davis was booked on a third-degree felony charge of fraudulent use of ID. He is being held in the Taylor County Jail on a $15,000 bond.”
