SAPD Officials Identify Man Who Died in Early Morning Crash

SAN ANGELO, TX- Early this morning at 2:21 a.m., the San Angelo Police Department responded to the 900 block of W. Avenue D for a major crash. There was a report of a disabled vehicle in the Sulphur Draw.

Tracy Gonzalez, public information officer for SAPD, stated, “Officers arrived and located the vehicle resting on the embankment across from their location and fresh damage to a guard rail. Officers were unable to access the vehicle and responded to a secondary location behind the 500 block of South Park.”

After maneuvering to the second location, officers were able to climb down the embankment. Finally, able to reach the vehicle, officers approached and found a male driver who showed no signs of life.

Gonzalez stated, “San Angelo Fire Department Medics responded to the scene, along with Justice of the Peace Judge J.P. McGuire, who pronounced the man deceased on impact by blunt force trauma to the head and chest. Personnel from the Department’s Crime Scene Investigations Unit and Criminal Investigations Division also responded.”

The vehicle in the embankment was a white Ford F450 Pickup. The male driver was 31 years old and the only occupant in the vehicle during the crash.

Gonzalez added, “The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.”

Evidence gathered from the scene suggested the driver of the pickup was traveling west on W. Avenue D at a high rate of speed. While traveling at the high rate of speed, the vehicle entered the parking lot of the Park 700 Condominiums, struck the guard rail and went airborne.

Gonzalez concluded, “The truck traveled approximately 45 feet before coming to rest on the opposing embankment of Sulphur Draw. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality responded at the request of Officers due to concern about a diesel leak from the truck’s ruptured fuel tank.”

The cause of the collision is still under investigation.

Update 4:27 P.M.

Officer Tracy Gonzalez said the man who died in this morning's crash has been identified as Andrew Perez from Midland, Texas. The vehicle was registered to Elite Auto Movers out of Midland.

Perez's next of kin has been notified.
