300 Animals Seized from Animal 'Sanctuary' in Callahan County

EULA, TX- Thursday morning, Oct. 13, a Callahan County Sheriff’s deputy served a search warrant at AM Farmers Sanctuary on FM 603, and over 300 animals were seized.

A local news source for that area stated, “According to Paul Washburn with Rescue the Animals (SPCA for West Texas), there are 150 dogs, plus cats, goats, chickens, ducks and donkeys on the property.” Washburn called it “the largest [ever] seizure in our area.”

Washburn added, “It's a product of an ongoing investigation that we've been involved with that the Humane Society of North Texas has been involved in, and it’s pretty bad.”

After the search warrant was executed and officials started to remove the animals, workers with the Humane Society of North Texas began monitoring the ammonia levels within the home. Washburn noted that “the home is soaked in urine and feces. The odor is so pungent that workers can only stay in the house for a few minutes at a time.”

As of now, Abilene animal control and Abilene Police Department are assisting and conducting an investigation, said the news source.

Kenneth Rogers, the father of the woman who owns the AM Farmers Sanctuary explained that his daughter was just trying to help the animals.

He said, “She just didn’t ever have the assistance or help from anybody to finish and do what she needed to do to help them.

As of now, it is unknown what charges the owner will face, if any.

The local news site noted, “The animals will be held for at least 10 days. A custody hearing will then be held in Callahan County, according to Washburn.”
