Concho Valley Rape Crisis Center: Celebrating 25 Years of Support

San Angelo, TX – Yesterday evening, the Concho Valley Rape Crisis Center celebrated its 25^th anniversary with an Art for Hope Gala. Attendees had the opportunity to bid on beautiful artwork, enjoy live music and help make a difference in the community.

Over the past 25 years, the center has undergone changes to better serve the community of San Angelo and surrounding areas. The newest change has occurred with the addition of services directed towards the LGBT+ community.

Beginning in September of last year, the center now offers a dedicated safe place for anyone who needs support. The center is not only focused on victims of sexual assault, but also on those individuals who may be marginalized in society. The crisis center is also dedicated to educating the community and promoting the importance of being informed in today’s society.

“We need to talk to people about oppression, about bullying and about gender discrimination that leads to sexual violence,” said Karla Payne, executive director of CVRCC.

Payne said having better understanding of this community is vital to helping combat the bullying and aggression people are exposed to after encountering discrimination. Additionally, by adding the new services, members of the LGBT+ community have a place to feel safe and where they can feel supported.

“The more we learn about other people who might not be like us, or look like us, or love like us, it just makes a difference,” Payne said.

The event featured a live auction filled with beautiful art pieces as well as a silent auction. Musical entertainment was provided by Manny Campos and Mykel Martin. The event's proceeds will all be directed into funding the programs and initiatives for CVRCC. 

The community is invited to participate in any way they are able to, whether that's volunteering their time as an advocate, assisting the educational programs or leading the Pride services--any help is welcome. 

“It's a great cause," Christopher Odom, president of the Board said. “So any donations are highly appreciated.”
