A pickup truck hauling construction materials burst into flames Wednesday afternoon near the intersection of N. Main and College Ave. in downtown San Angelo.
Immediately adjacent to where the flaming truck was is a four-story commercial building under construction next to the Shannon Medical Center.
Firefighters from Station #1, including Ladder 1, were dispatched to the location. The fire was fairly large for a vehicle fire when firefighters arrived. Smoke could be seen rising above downtown San Angelo.
Within 15 minutes, the firefighters said the truck fire was extinguished.
An investigation of the cause in underway. We will update if there is more information released by Fire Marshal Ross Coleman.
Update 3:55 p.m.
Fire Marshal Ross Coleman said that his investigation concludes that the fire was an accident.
An operator of equipment in the back of the truck was adjusting the gas tank on that piece of machinery causing gas to pour over a hot engine and ignite, Coleman said.
The man who caused the incident suffered minor injuries but was treated at the scene and released, Coleman said.
The San Angelo Fire Department responded to the fire at 3:15 p.m. Coleman said.
