More Weekend Arrests: Pokémon and Assaults with a Bat and Knife

As if the previous report wasn’t enough, the San Angelo Police Department released details on other arrests that took place this weekend, including Pokémon and aggravated assaults with a bat and knife.

San Angeloans may have noticed the groups of people showing up at all hours of the day at different locations in an attempt to collect Pokémon. These locations are now called “Pokéstops.”

Officer Tracy Gonzalez, public information officer, said officers conducted a traffic stop on a suspicious vehicle in the area of Hillside Drive and Gun Club Road on July 17 at 1 a.m. The driver was not out to commit a crime, but rather was found to be playing Pokémon Go. No citations were issued.

In another arrest on July 16, just after 6 p.m., officers were sent to the intersection of Raney and Howard for an assault. The victim, a 37-year-old male, was found injured and sitting on the curb, surrounded by a group of people. The victim had been assaulted with a baseball bat by a female.

“Several witnesses advised officers that the suspect(s) may have fled the scene in a maroon or white vehicle (both color vehicles seen leaving the scene after the assault),” said Officer Gonzalez. “The victim was transported to Shannon Medical Center for treatment.”

Gonzalez said officers learned the identity of possible suspects who assaulted the victim and attempted to locate them.

“Parties present during the assault were located at a residence in the 2500 block of Atlas,” Gonzalez stated. “A detective was called out to Atlas, and at the conclusion of the investigation, Ashlee Coffee, 25, was arrested for Aggravated Assault with/Deadly Weapon. The bat used in the assault was located and seized as evidence."

On July 17 at 1:24 a.m., officers were dispatched to an apartment at 212 Koberlin for an unknown problem. Gonzalez said officers arrived and made contact with a 21-year-old female who told officers her boyfriend, 18-year-old Demarcus D. Greenwood, assaulted her.

“Officers located Greenwood inside the apartment,” stated Gonzalez. “Officers investigated the call and confirmed the victim attempted to call 911 earlier but Greenwood took the phone from her before she could give her apartment number.”

When the victim called again, she was finally able to tell Dispatch her apartment number before Greenwood took the phone, threw it against a wall and prevented her from leaving the apartment.

“Subsequent to the investigation, police arrested Greenwood for an Assault Causes Bodily Injury Family Violence, Unlawful Restraint, Interfere with Emergency Request for Assistance and an outstanding City Warrant,” said Gonzalez.

At 2:50 a.m. on July 17, police were dispatched to the 1900 block of Raney St. for the report of Domestic Assault. Both subjects Belinda Cantu Hernandez, 48, and Ernest Hernandez, 50, were determined to be involved in a mutual assault and were taken into custody.

Finally, on July 17 at 11:22 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 100 block of North Pope in reference to a domestic disturbance/assault in progress. Officers arrived and located a female victim who had been assaulted by her boyfriend, who also attempted to stab her with a knife.

“During the altercation, the victim received a small puncture wound to her index finger,” explained Gonzalez. “The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Edward Gutierrez, left prior to police arrival but was located a short time later at the Stripes store, 1733 Pulliam. “

An investigator was called out, and subsequent to a field investigation, Gutierrez was charged with Assault Family Violence Causing Bodily Injury Family Violence.
