The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) reminds all Texas residents that hurricane season begins today and continues through Nov. 30.
Coastal areas along the Atlantic and Gulf Coast are subject to hurricanes or tropical storms. Areas farther from the coast can still be affected by these storms.
Rain bands associated with tropical systems have an extremely wide reach, so monitoring changing weather conditions during hurricane season is critically important for all Texans.
Hurricanes can reach winds speeds of 74 to 157 mph, causing catastrophic damage to the coastline areas and spawn tornadoes, storm surges and flooding.
The following safety precautions are suggested to help avoid or prepare for inclement weather conditions.
- Assemble an emergency kit that includes essential documents, supplies and provisions.
- Review hurricane evacuation maps, and select a route for you and your family.
- Plan how all family members and pets will evacuate safely.
- Consider any special needs for individuals with disabilities or the elderly.
- Stay informed about changing weather conditions in and around your area.
In case of emergency assistance needed during a disaster citizens are urged to register for the State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry (STEAR), a free registry that provides local emergency planners and responders with additional information about needs in their communities.
Registering can be done by calling 2-1-1, the state’s free 24-hour hotline. Community resources information can also be found by dialing (877) 541-7905.
