Man Stopped for Traffic Violation Resists Arrest and Gets Tasered

A little after 6 p.m. today, the front of the Angelo State LeGrand Alumni and Visitors Center on University Avenue overflowed with San Angelo Police. About eight patrol units and one ambulance took over the parking lot to assist with a San Angelo man who became aggressive after an officer initiated a traffic stop.

Officer T. Griffith said, at 6:12 p.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop in the 2900 block of South Jackson on a 2006 Dodge van.

“During the course of that traffic stop, a white male subject, 27 years of age was taken into custody. During that arrest, he did resist, which resulted in all the units being over here,” explained Officer Griffith.

Officer Griffith said there were no significant injuries; however, the suspect was being treated for minor injuries due to taser deployment.

Griffith said the man was arrested for traffic violations, primarily a suspended driver’s license.

“Misdemeanor charges are going to be following,” said the Officer.

During the stop, officers looked thoroughly around the area. When asked why, Officer Griffith said, in the course of resisting arrest, the man kept reaching into his pants, so officers were concerned about drugs and/or weapons being used.

Griffith added that there were passengers in the vehicle, but they were released. As for the driver, the suspect will be taking a trip to the Tom Green County Jail.
