This weekend was a busy one for local law enforcement, and a few San Angelo citizens made some not-so-smart choices that got them booked into the Tom Green County Jail.
In fact, during a chase that led to a fiery crash late last night, 64-year-old Manual T. Rodriquez crashed into a stationary San Angelo Police car when officers directed him to turnaround from the secured scene.
Officer Tracy Gonzalez, public information officer, said, at approximately 11:36 p.m., Rodriquez, who was traveling westbound in his 2003 Ford F-150, was forced to turn around by police. They had just secured the scene where the chase and crash occurred, and the suspect fled on foot (read more here).
Rodriquez reportedly pulled into the Pearl of the Concho in the 300 block of Rio Concho Drive, and then began to back up onto Rio Concho where his truck's tailgate collided with a 2010 Dodge Charger police unit.
“The officer was near the door panel of his unit when Rodriquez’s truck collided with his Charger,” said Gonzalez. “The officer was injured.”
Gonzalez said when Rodriquez's vehicle collided with the patrol unit, it pinned the officer in between the patrol unit door and vehicle's passenger compartment. The officer was retrieving something from inside his vehicle when the crash occurred.
She added that officers made contact with Rodriquez and noted the odor of alcohol coming from his person, so they performed a standardized field sobriety test, which he failed. He was arrested for DWI and booked into the TGCJ.
The injured officer, who has been with SAPD for 7.5 years, was transported to Shannon Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries and later released.
In addition to Rodriquez, there were a total of 77 people booked into the TGCJ since our last update on April 14.
