Angelo State University’s Ram Rugby Football Club is the winner of the National Small College Rugby Organization’s (NSCRO) Lonestar Conference Championship, held on February 28 in San Antonio, said a press release Thursday.
The ASU team beat St. Edward’s University Rugby Football Club, 74-53, in the final to claim the championship, which makes ASU the de facto Texas state champion. It also qualifies ASU for the Cowboy Cup competition April 2-3 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, against rugby club teams from colleges in NSCRO’s Rocky Mountain Conference. The Cowboy Cup also doubles as the first round of the NSCRO National Champion’s Cup playoffs.
According to the press release, ASU entered the Lonestar Conference Tournament after completing an undefeated 16-1-0 regular season. The team also won the South Texas Rugby Tournament and the Heart of Texas Tournament.
Ram Rugby players are: Tadeo Canon Masjon of Cordoba, Argentina, Charles Chester of Temple, Derrick Clifton of Vernon, Watkin Cocker of Euless, Gavin Crowder of Round Rock, Trevor Dailey of Lubbock, Preston Granzin of Red Oak, Tyler Holder of San Antonio, Geoffrey Johnston of Panama City, Panama, Anthony Kisiday of Medina, Ohio, Troy Knudsen of Allen, Tashir Newsome of Philadelphia, Penn., Paul Nguyen of San Antonio, Jacob Reed of Burnet, Kevin Reid of Rosenberg, Glenn Revell of Austin, Kenneth Roller of Austin, Brian Signorelli of Santa Maria, Calif., Mashersad Soedersono of Jakarta, Indonesia, Emmett Spooner of San Angelo, Mychael Tijerina of Robert Lee, Stetson Timmons of Littlefield, Austin Vandiver of Rockwall, Beau Waskom of Allen and Andre Zamudio of El Paso.
The student coach is Dundy Walker of Red Oak. The faculty advisor is Dr. John Klingemann, chair of the Department of History and interim chair of the Department of Communication and Mass Media.
Additionally, ASU’s Bass Anglers club team recently placed eighth at the Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) College Fishing Southern Conference contest on Somerville Lake near Brenham. By placing in the top 10 out of 89 teams, ASU’s Chase Gibson of Denver City and Scott Halbrooks of Lubbock automatically qualified for the FLW College Fishing Championship on Lake Keowee in South Carolina on March 17-19.
The Bass Anglers faculty sponsor is Paul Osmanski, assistant clinical professor of nursing.
Unlike intramural teams, ASU club sports teams are registered student organizations that are directed and funded by the Office of Student Life and overseen by the Club Sports Council.
