A press release Monday said #ThisPlaceMatters, a 99-second video about San Angelo produced by the City’s Public Information Office, won the Best of Show trophy at the American Advertising Federation’s local ADDY Awards Friday night.
#ThisPlaceMatters is a montage of video vignettes that showcase some of what makes San Angelo special: Fort Concho, water lilies, rodeo, Angelo State University, Goodfellow Air Force Base, downtown, the Concho River, the arts, San Angelo State Park … even roller derby. It was produced initially to create excitement among the Ports-to-Plains Alliance, which hosts its annual conference in San Angelo this fall.

Public Information also won a Gold Award for “Answering the Call,” a recruitment video for the San Angelo Fire Department. Both video spots will advance to compete in the AAF’s regional competition. This marked the first year the Public Information Office has entered the ADDY Awards.
The "Answering the Call" video produced for the San Angelo Fire Department recruiting effort:
Since debuting on the City of San Angelo-Public Information Facebook page in September, it has been viewed more than 180,000 times.
“We never dreamed it would go viral,” Public Information Officer Anthony Wilson said. “The reception certainly underscores the passion with which San Angeloans – both past and present – embrace their community and its innumerable charms. And, it once again proves Brian Groves, our multimedia coordinator, has an absolute gift for visual storytelling.”
Other winners at Friday’s awards ceremony were:
- Gold Awards – Sovereign Media (two awards), Angelo State University, KIDY-FOX.
- Silver Awards – KIDY, Live Design and Media Advantage (three awards each); Angelo State and Company Printing (two awards each); Foster Communications, Nexstar and Sovereign Media.
