Texas Drivers Encouraged to Renew Licenses Before Spring Break Rush

The Department of Public Safety is encouraging Texas drivers to use online services and high-capacity mega centers when renewing their driver’s license before spring break, said a press release Tuesday.

According to the release, eligible residents can skip the office visit by using Texas.gov to renew their licenses or identification cards.

“Because we know customers value their time, DPS provide several options for customers to complete driver license or identification card transactions online, or in person at high-capacity mega centers,” said Steven McCraw, DPS Director.

Spring break makes it difficult to plan out renewals in the vacation rush, and by using these services, time is saved when waiting in line for approval.

“We encourage Texans to make the most of their time by using these options, especially during the Spring Break weeks,” McCraw said.

 Mega center locations include Austin, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio metropolitan areas. The centers offer larger facilities and technology designed to improve the efficiency and customer service of the renewal process.

To be eligible for online renewal cards, people cannot have been expired for more than two years and the card holder must be a U.S. citizen. Once renewed, the expiration date on the new license will be six years after the current card’s expiration date regardless of early renewal. This is the same for phone call renewals as well.  

Licenses must be renewed in person every 12 years, so an updated photo can be taken and eyesight can be tested, according to DPS regulations. If customers renew one year prior to expiration, a more convenient schedule is guaranteed.
