San Angelo may not be a big city but our cab services do stay busy and the holiday season, seeing increases in the amount of people in need of a ride.
Duane Edmondson of the Yellow Cab Company said, “With all the traveling done during this time we get a lot of calls from people using our airport.”
He said out of town visitors, as well as military personnel, keep their 17 vehicles occupied. With 21 drivers, Yellow Cab Company is able to offer their services 24 hours of the day.
“We are there when you need us,” Edmondson said.
He said the company works well with the the San Angelo Police Department in looking out for people in need of taxi services.
“We are looking out for the safety off all people. You can party all you want to but make it safe,” he said.
Edmondson explained that there are many incidents in which a police officer will stop someone as they are walking to their car.
“They aren’t out to get you into trouble. A lot of times they will just call us up to give a ride to someone who shouldn’t be driving,” Edmondson said.
He said there are also many businesses in town that will pay for their customers to make it home safely if they see that they could be a danger when driving.
"I've seen plenty of the bars downtown cover the cost of a taxi ride for a customer who has spent all their money on booze," Edmondson said.
“Call a cab so that you can make it home and sleep peacefully knowing that you didn’t endanger anyone’s life,” he said recalling what happened to one of his friends.
“I picked him up late at night. He had been out and decided to drive home. On the way he hit a car and killed the other person," Edmondson said.
He continued to state how his friend tells him "There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of what happened that night."
Edmondson said, "Don't put yourself into a bad situation. Make a call and prevent an accident."
For the night of New Year's Eve, San Angelo will have another option for getting home safely. Many local business are sponsering Arrive Alive in Style in order to keep the roads safe.
The program is a regularly-scheduled shuttle service between bars, restaurants and venues in limousines provided by San Angelo Limousine and underwritten by Pinkie's, Inc. the wholesale provider of liquor.
New Year's Eve revelers will be able to catch a limo from central pickup points at the Mejor Que Nada, 1911 S. Bryant, Goodfellow AFB, or at a location near the ASU campus.
From there, revelers can ride a limo to locations of choice, and ride from one venue to another. The cost of each limo ride is $10 each way or $7 each way if five tickets are purchased in advance. Tickets can be purchaced at Mejor Que Nada or from the limo driver at pickup. A full pickup schedule will be published Monday morning. The service will run from 7 a.m. until 3 a.m. Dec. 31, 2013. Participating venues are:
- Blaine's Pub, 10 W. Harris St.
- The Penny Pub and Grill, 2400 College Hills Blvd.
- Grinner's Daiquiri Bar, 217 S Chadbourne St.
- Mejor Que Nada (will be open NYE), 1911 S. Bryant Blvd.
- The Black Swan, 118. S Chadbourne St.
- Fuentes Cafe Downtown, 101 S. Chadbourne St.
- Stagecoach Saloon, 4205 S. Bryant Blvd.
More venues are being added and all participating locations will be announced Monday morning along with a map. Red Ball Taxi will provide standard fare taxi service from your doorstep to one of the pickup points.
