On Sun. Dec. 6, at approximately 2:50 a.m., the Edwards County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the Rocksprings Border Patrol Station regarding a missing hunter who had not been seen since the previous day. Agents from the U.S. Border Patrol’s Rocksprings and Del Rio Sector Border stations, and Border Search Trauma and Rescue (BORSTAR), responded to the area to begin the search, said a press release Tuesday.
According to the release, the Department of Public Safety air unit was initially dispatched, but officials were unable to continue their search due to heavy fog in the area. Therefore, at approximately 5 a.m., the BORSTAR team was activated to assist in the rescue efforts and actively searched the area.
At approximately 10 a.m., BORSTAR agents, certified Emergency Medical Technicians skilled at identifying injuries and assessing levels of injury to determine if advanced care is needed, located the 52-year-old lost hunter. The man was medically evaluated, but declined any medical treatment, said the press release.
“I commend our agents for their hard work and dedication, which resulted in quick recovery of the hunter before hypothermia and serious injury could occur,” said Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Rodolfo Karisch.
