Two uninsured motorists collided at the intersection of Jefferson St. and the eastbound frontage road of Houston-Harte Expressway Tuesday afternoon at 5:04 p.m.
According to investigating San Angelo Police Officer Phil Bylsma, the driver of the blue mid-1990s Honda Accord with one passenger did not stop when the traffic light turned red while driving eastbound on the frontage road. A southbound 2005 Pontiac Sunfire on Jefferson with five total occupants collided with the Accord.
Although both vehicles are drivable, all of the fiberglass was torn off the front of the Sunfire.
“A witness told me that the eastbound traffic had a red light and the Honda traveled through the intersection during a red light,” Bylsma said. The driver of the Honda Accord will be cited for failure to stop at a red light.
The driver of the Accord complained of neck or back injuries and was transported to Shannon Medical Center in stable condition.
The Sunfire is a compact car and it was packed with five people including the driver. Two occupants of the Sunfire were transported to Shannon with minor neck and back injuries.
Neither driver was carrying valid insurance. The driver of the Sunfire was also cited for driving with his driver’s license suspended.
One of the injured from the Sunfire was estimated to be an eight-year-old child
Bylsma said that all of the victims indicated that they were wearing seatbelts. The driver of the Sunfire showed the police officer an insurance proof that did not have his name on it, according to the investigating officer. "He has a suspended license, so I'd say that puts the burden of proof on him, so I cited him for no insurance," said Bylsma.
