Elevated Fire Weather Expected Today; Warm, Dry Pattern Continues

SAN ANGELO, TX — Elevated fire weather conditions are expected across much of the Concho Valley on Friday as warm temperatures, low humidity and gusty winds increase the risk for rapidly spreading fires, according to the National Weather Service in San Angelo.

The highest risk period is from noon to 6 p.m. Friday. Forecasters warned that any fires that start during this time could spread quickly and urged residents to avoid outdoor burning or activities that could create sparks.

Relative humidity is forecast to drop to between 22% and 27%, while west winds of 15 to 25 mph are expected, with gusts reaching up to 35 mph. Afternoon temperatures are projected to reach the upper 70s to lower 80s across the region.

The elevated fire danger comes amid a continued stretch of warm and dry weather expected to last into next week. High temperatures across the area are forecast to remain above normal through the weekend, with highs generally in the 70s and lower 80s. A weak cold front arriving Saturday is expected to lower temperatures only a few degrees.

Overnight lows are forecast to range from the upper 30s to mid-50s through next week, depending on location.

Despite the dry conditions, rainfall totals for 2025 show mixed results across West Central Texas. San Angelo recorded 27.24 inches of rain last year, about 6.31 inches above normal, according to National Weather Service data. Abilene, by contrast, recorded 21.51 inches, roughly 3.73 inches below normal.

Other reported rainfall totals include Brownwood with 31.21 inches, Mason with 36.79 inches, Menard with 50.15 inches and San Saba with 37.53 inches. Rainfall data was compiled using multiple observation sources, including ASOS stations, the West Texas Mesonet and CoCoRaHS reports.

Forecasters said the ongoing dry and warm pattern will continue to elevate fire danger at times, particularly on days with stronger winds.
