Cowboys Waive Former All-Pro Trevon Diggs After Christmas Day Dispute

FRISCO, TX — The Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday waived former All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs, ending a turbulent final chapter between the club and one of its most dynamic defensive players of the past decade.

As 2025 comes to a close, so does Diggs’ five-season tenure in Dallas.

NFL Insider Jordan Schultz reported that a Christmas Day incident contributed in Diggs' release. Schultz said that to his understanding, after the Cowboys finished their Christmas game at the Washington Commanders, Diggs asked HC Brian Schottenheimer to stay in Washington for the holiday to spend time with family since he is from the area. Players often ask, and are usually granted, additional family time during the holidays if the schedule allows for it. Schottenheimer denied that request.

Diggs then again said he wanted to be with his family and that if he went back to Dallas, he'd just be flying right back on the first flight out, especially considering players had several days off after the Thursday game. The Cowboys denied his request again. Dallas then released Diggs on Tuesday.

A second-round pick out of Alabama in 2020, Diggs quickly emerged as one of the league’s premier ballhawks. He led the NFL with 11 interceptions in 2021 — two of them returned for touchdowns — and earned Pro Bowl selections in each of his first two seasons, along with first-team All-Pro honors. He recorded 17 interceptions across his first three years in Dallas.

But injuries derailed his trajectory. Diggs suffered a season-ending knee injury early in 2023 and struggled to regain form in 2024, eventually finishing that season on injured reserve following another procedure on the repaired knee. His 2025 campaign was also hampered by a concussion and recurring knee soreness that again sent him to IR before he returned in Week 16 against the Chargers. His Christmas Day appearance against Washington ultimately became his final game in a Cowboys uniform.

Diggs’ release does not absolve Dallas of his remaining guaranteed salary or his final game check, but it clears his $14.5 million 2026 cap figure. The Cowboys are expected to redirect that space toward free agency or contract extensions for players such as George Pickens, Jadeveon Clowney or Javonte Williams.

The move concludes a strained year between Diggs and the organization. Tensions surfaced as early as the summer over his rehabilitation plan — a disagreement that cost Diggs $500,000. His season included reported disconnects with defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus and head coach Brian Schottenheimer, a controversial concussion incident at home, and multiple returns and setbacks related to his knee.
