Texas A&M Falls Flat in CFP Opening Round

COLLEGE STATION, TX — Miscues and turnovers doomed the Texas A&M Aggies in their opening round College Football Playoff matchup against Miami at Kyle Field on Saturday. Although the Aggies dominated total yards and time of possession throughout the afternoon, Miami took advantage of three turnovers and a blocked field goal to claim victory, 10-3.

The Aggies limited the Hurricanes to just 278 yards of total offense and allowed only 12 first downs. Miami was held to 3-of-12 on third down, while Texas A&M’s defense recorded six tackles for loss and two sacks. Senior cornerback Will Lee III, junior safety Dalton Brooks and junior linebacker Daymion Sanford each tallied seven total tackles to lead the Maroon & White.

Neither team managed to score in the first half, marking the first time in College Football Playoff history that a game remained scoreless at halftime. Miami opened the scoring with a 21-yard field goal on the first drive of the third quarter. Texas A&M tied the game with 8:03 left when Randy Bond converted a 35-yard field goal.

The deciding score came late in the fourth quarter, when Miami quarterback Carson Beck connected with Malachi Toney on an 11-yard touchdown pass with 1:49 remaining.

Quarterback Marcel Reed and the Aggies had a chance to answer in the final minutes, but failed to do so when Reed threw an interception to seal the game.

Reed completed 25 of 39 passes for 237 yards and added 27 rushing yards. Sophomore wide receiver Mario Craver led all receivers with 92 yards on seven catches.

Texas A&M finishes 2025 with an 11-2 overall record and a disappointing loss in what had been one of the best seasons in Aggie Football history.
