SAN ANGELO, TX — O.C. Fisher Reservoir, which continues to recover after falling below 1% capacity, was stocked with more than 300 white crappie Wednesday, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
The hope is that the fish will spawn in the spring and help rebuild a quality crappie fishery again.
The lake at San Angelo State Park dropped to as low as 0.8% percent during the worst part of a drought last year, leaving it with less than 1,000 acre-feet of water.
One acre-foot of water is equivalent to 326,000 gallons.
Heavy rain in September of last year helped revive the lake, and the flooding during the July 4 weekend this year continued its recovery.
It is currently at about 15% capacity with nearly 18,000 acre-feet of water.
TPWD’s efforts to restock the lake included 2,500 channel catfish last November, 21,000 bluegill fish in April and 58,000 largemouth bass fingerlings in May.
A fishing survey in October yielded encouraging results, and TPWD stated there should be “excellent fishing opportunities in the near future,” with legal-sized fish by the spring of 2026.
