BIG SPRING, TX — Ozona running back Christian Villarreal, who had the state’s attention as he chased the Texas single-season rushing record, had his incredible year come to an end Friday in a 35-14 loss to Anson in the first round of the playoffs.
It was a stunning end for the Lions, who were ranked No. 6 in the state in Class 2A Division I and coming off their first perfect regular season in 23 years.
However, Ozona drew a difficult first-round opponent in Anson, and the Tigers managed to hold Villarreal to his lowest rushing total of the season with 162 yards and a TD on 24 carries.
His previous lowest total was a 230-yard performance against Brady in Week 3.
Villarreal finished the year with 246 carries for 3,667 yards and 53 touchdowns.
He came up 378 yards short of the record, which has stood for 72 years. Sugar Land’s Kenneth Hall rushed for 4,045 yards in 12 games in 1953.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Villarreal has not decided where and if he will continue to play football in college.
