Volunteers Needed to Place Flags at Fairmount Cemetery Ahead of Veterans Day

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Friends of Fairmount are calling on community volunteers to help honor local veterans by placing more than 1,800 American flags at Fairmount Cemetery on Sunday, Nov. 9, 2025.

Volunteers will gather at 2 p.m. at the cemetery gazebo, located at 112 West Avenue N, to place flags on the graves of veterans. The project spans 57 acres and includes veterans from the Republic of Texas, the Texas Revolution, the Civil War, World Wars I and II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan, as well as Buffalo Soldiers and members of the Texas Army National Guard.

Organizers say the effort recognizes those who have served during both wartime and peacetime, including soldiers from the Battle of San Jacinto and the War with Mexico.

According to the Friends of Fairmount, the cemetery is the final resting place of 1,832 veterans. Among them are John Ingram and Daniel Millar, who both fought for the Republic of Texas and served at the Battle of San Jacinto. Ingram later joined the Texas militia in 1835 and was buried at Fairmount after his death in 1896 while on a visit to Fort Concho. Millar arrived in Texas in 1831 and served in Captain William J. E. Heard’s company of “Citizen Soldiers.” He died in 1894.

The cemetery also includes 117 Confederate veterans and 1,713 veterans who served the United States. Records show 17 veterans served in the Spanish-American War, 272 in World War I, 680 in World War II, 128 in the Korean War, and 103 in the Vietnam War.

The annual Veterans Day Ceremony will take place in the Veterans section of Fairmount Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2025. The public is welcome to attend. Volunteers are also encouraged to return on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 10 a.m. to help remove the flags.
