OZONA, TX— The Ozona Lions capped off the regular season in spectacular fashion when they beat the Christoval Cougars, 68-0.
A perfect season was on the line Friday night for the Ozona Lions when they faced district opponent, the Christoval Cougars. Everything lined up tremendously for Ozona this season and this game was no different. The Lions were hungry to end the regular season strong with a win.
The task didn’t deter Christoval as they were successful in recovering an onside kick to start the game, but Ozona didn’t flinch. The Lions forced a punt and on their first drive, Michael Preddy found Tino Castillo downfield for a quick score.
Ozona then just continued to pour it on. The next time the Lion offense took the field, superstar running back Christian Villarreal found the endzone from 21-yards out to give Ozona a 15-0 lead with 9:12 remaining in the first quarter.
After forcing the Cougars to punt again, Villarreal took matters into his own hands again and sprinted down the field for a 63-yard touchdown to put the Lion’s lead at 21-0.
Villarreal would find paydirt two more times in the first quarter, once from 12-yards and once from 76-yards. It looked like Villarreal and the Lion’s coaching staff was trying to get him to break the single game rushing record, but Christoval would begin going for it on 4th down, avoiding the punt.
The Lions pounced early and had a 41-0 lead over the Cougs after the first quarter.
Into the second quarter, the Cougars possessed the ball for a good chunk of clock, but Villarreal did manage to find the endzone once again out of the wildcat from 2-yards out. At the break, Ozona was leading Christoval, 47-0.
The Lions continued to put up points in the second half and much of the work was done by the backups. Boston Pitts, Coach Pitts’ son, threw a touchdown in the fourth quarter and the Lion’s defense held on for the shutout. When the clock ran out, the final score was 68-0.
With that, for the first time in 23 years, the Ozona Lions are a perfect 10-0 and claim the 1st seed in their district. Now, the work continues with the Anson Tigers in the Bi-District round of the playoffs.
The Ozona Lions will play Anson in Big Spring next Friday and there is still work to be done. The state record has to take a back seat. Villarreal is about 500 yards away from taking the crown.
But he, and the Pride, are focused on one thing… winning as a team.
