OZONA, TX — Ozona High School star running back Christian Villarreal was featured Tuesday by Texas Football for his incredible start to the season.
Villarreal is currently on pace to break the state rushing record of 4,045 yards set in 1953 by the “Sugar Land Express,” Kenneth Hall.
The Ozona back — who stands 6-foot-2, 205 pounds — has already rushed for 1,772 yards and 23 touchdowns in five games.
He’s averaging 354 yards per game and nearly 18 yards per carry.
If Villarreal can continue his pace, he would break the state rushing record in the 12th game of the season, which would fall in the second round of the playoffs.
The record has stood for 72 years, and it’s still an extremely difficult challenge for Villarreal to try and chase it down.
His five game totals so far are 371 yards against McCamey, 373 against Eldorado, 230 against Brady, 450 against Harper and 348 against Miles.
Next up for the Lions is their District 3-2A Division I opener at home this week against Reagan County.
