CBP Officers Seize More Than 90 lbs of Marijuana at Del Rio International Bridge

DEL RIO - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Del Rio International Bridge recently discovered more $90,000 worth of suspected marijuana hidden in a vehicle coming from Mexico.

“Smugglers continue to use elaborate methods to try to smuggle their drugs into the country,” said Port Director Alberto D. Perez, Del Rio Port of Entry. “This seizure is yet another illustration of the professionalism and dedication our frontline CBP officers put forth on a daily basis.”

On Oct. 11, CBP officers, working at the Del Rio Port of Entry, encountered a 1997 Ford F-250 pickup truck as it arrived in the United States from Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila, Mexico. Upon inspection, officers searched an auxiliary fuel tank on the vehicle. Through the use of a CBP drug-detecting canine and a non-intrusive imaging system, officers discovered 82 packages of suspected marijuana, weighing 91.7 pounds, worth an estimated $91,700 hidden in the tank.

The driver, a 31-year-old San Antonio man, was turned over to Homeland Security Investigations for federal prosecution.

CBP’s Del Rio Port of Entry is part of the Joint Task Force-West South Texas Corridor, which leverages federal, state and local resources to combat transnational criminal organizations.
