Suspect Killed in Armed Standoff at Retirement Apartments

SAN ANGELO, TX — An armed standoff at the Oak Grove Senior Apartments ended late Wednesday morning after the suspect died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

San Angelo Police Department Assistant Police Chief Adam Scott briefed the media at 11:50 a.m. and said the suspect was discovered deceased after law enforcement entered his home following failed negotiation attempts.

The suspect was a 70-year-old male who was barricaded in his third-floor apartment.

Police Chief Travis Griffith addressed the media at about 9:35 a.m. and said SAPD received a call at 8:08 a.m. Wednesday regarding a shooting victim. Along with the San Angelo Fire Department, they were able to treat the victim, a woman who is in stable condition at Shannon Hospital.

He added that the residents of Oak Grove were evacuated to safety.

Griffith said the shooting took place inside one of the buildings at the apartment complex.

"We do have the San Angelo SWAT team, and a hostage negotiations team has arrived on scene, along with the criminal investigations division. They're here to hopefully find a peaceful solution," Griffith said. "We ask for people of faith to be praying that we have a peaceful solution to this ordeal and that justice is ultimately the outcome."
