WALL, TX— The Wall Hawks (5-0) continued the slaughter of their schedule with a 35-point shutout over the Sweetwater Mustangs (1-4).
Fate whispered to the warrior, "You cannot withstand the storm."
The warrior replied, "I am the storm."
This week, it was homecoming for the Wall Hawks. The very top of the home stands to the bottom and even along the fence line stood the Hawk Faithful. The homecoming queen nominees received recognition and the Wall Hawk band performed their best at halftime.
As the two teams exited the tunnels, the Hawks ran to the opposite end zone for a moment of reflection and peace. It was probably a good thing the Hawks spent a little time with the Lord before and after the game, because the Hawks came to snatch souls.
It was much more than just the offense as the defense and special teams got in on the scoring against Sweetwater. All three phases of the game contributed, be it York finding open receivers, defensive backs taking it back the other way, or a bad snap on a punt.
In the first quarter, Wall senior quarterback Landon York found Levi King towards the home sideline in the end zone for a quick strike to go up, 7-0. On the Mustangs' drive, the Hawks' Jager Thompson came up with an interception, but the Hawks would end the first quarter with only seven points.
Into the second, York hit senior Reid Robertson on a screen pass, and he took it 36 yards in for the score to give the Hawks a 14-0 lead. Hawks defender Jacob Braden ended up bringing down junior Caden Ortiz for a sack in the second quarter, and the game would hit halftime only seeing two touchdowns.
The Hawks kicked off the second half to Sweetwater, and the Mustangs finally ended up putting together a good drive … if it wasn’t for King stepping in front of a pass and taking it 83 yards the other way to add to Wall’s score, 21-0.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, Wall’s Dylan Sellers sacked Ortiz on third down, sending out the punt unit. After a bad snap, the Hawks recovered the ball in the end zone to give them a 28-0 lead with 11:14 left in the game. Hagyn Barbee then caught a pass and took it 39 yards to the end zone with 6:46 left in the game, giving the Hawks a 35-0 lead which they would hold until time expired.
In the end, the Hawks defense handled the Mustangs' offense. The Sweetwater defensive line and defense did give the Wall offense some fits here and there. York was swarmed and hit more than a few times.
After Week 5, the Hawks have two shutouts so far this season with the other coming in Week 3 over the Jim Ned Indians, another team in 3A-DII like Sweetwater. In Week 1, the Mason Punchers managed seven points in the fourth quarter.
In Week 2 against the 4A-DI Brownwood Lions, the Hawks gave up three points until the closing minutes of the fourth quarter, where they gave up a touchdown. And against Monahans last week, the Lobos scored 13 in the fourth quarter. It's very impressive that in four of their games this season against bigger opponents, the Hawks have only allowed 23 points.
Next week, the Hawks have Idalou, the same team they beat last year, 33-10. After that, district starts against Merkel, which won its game Friday against the San Angelo TLCA Eagles, 58-`12.
The Devil whispered, "You are not strong enough to withstand the storm."
To which the warrior replied, "I am the storm."
