Friday Night Rewind: Best Games, Biggest Wins and Top Performers From Last Week

Here are the best games, biggest wins and top performers from last week’s high school football action in West Texas:

Best Game: San Angelo Central-Abilene Cooper

The Central Bobcats earned their first win of the season Friday after erasing an 11-point deficit in the third quarter to pull off a 40-35 win over Abilene Cooper. Central’s Zey Johnson gave the Bobcats the lead with two TD runs in the fourth quarter, and Troy Ceballos intercepted a pass near his own 20-yard line in the final minute to end Cooper’s last threat.

Biggest Win: San Angelo Lake View

The Lake View Chiefs had a difficult challenge on the road against a dangerous Lamesa team, but the Chiefs passed the test with flying colors in a 44-27 win. Chris Alvizo had another 300-yard passing game, and Izaiah Rios had a career-high 170 rushing yards and five TDs. Lake View is off to a 3-0 start for the first time since 2019 with Lubbock High coming to town this week.

Biggest Surprise: Bronte

Rocky Rawls came out of retirement to coach the Bronte Longhorns, and they’ve come through with an eye-opening start to the season. The Longhorns have won all three games while allowing only one touchdown in wins over Santa Anna (45-0), Rule (50-0) and last week against Veribest (54-8). Bronte will face its toughest this week on the road against Menard.

Case for the Defense: Wall

In a battle of Top 10 teams, the Wall Hawks rose to the occasion with an extremely impressive 24-0 shutout win on the road over Jim Ned. Wall forced eight punts and allowed only seven first downs. The Hawks moved up a spot to No. 2 in this week’s 3A Division II state rankings, while previously No. 10 Jim Ned is no longer ranked.

Strong in Defeat: Brady

Brady came up short in a 46-32 loss to Ozona, but the Bulldogs had plenty to be proud of. They racked up 497 yards of offense, led by quarterback Sean Jacoby, who had 255 rushing yards and three TDs, along with 140 passing yards and two TDs (along with two interceptions). Johnny Roque had 19 tackles to lead a defense that “limited” Ozona’s Christian Villarreal to 230 rushing yards, which was actually an accomplishment considering he had averaged 372 in his previous two games.
