SAN ANGELO, TX — The Lake View Chiefs opened their football season Friday with an impressive 42-7 win over Fort Stockton at San Angelo Stadium.
With nearly every starter back from last season, there was optimism this could be a special season for the Chiefs, and that potential was on full display.
After a slow start, Lake View had one big play after another. The Chiefs scored three times in the second quarter and three more times in the third to turn the game into a blowout.
“This is going to be the breakthrough year,” said junior quarterback Chris Alvizo, who was sensational, completing 20-of-28 passes for 257 yards and four touchdowns. "This is the year if there’s going to be one, and I really trust in everyone.”
Running back Izaiah Rios was a dynamic threat for the Chiefs who had their first and last scores of the game. His 36-yard catch and run got them on the scoreboard with 7:29 left in the second quarter.
He later broke loose for a 47-yard TD run in the final minute of the third quarter.
He finished with seven carries for 95 yards and a TD, along with three catches for 52 yards and a TD.
Braylon White had eight catches for 115 yards and a TD, and Chris Rodela and Calvin Whitfield also had TD catches.
Yet the game-changing play came on defense, when Kentrell Johnson returned an interception 95 yards for a score with only 13 seconds left in the second quarter, giving Lake View a 21-7 lead at halftime.
Johnson took fourth place in the 200-meter dash last spring at the state track meet, and he flew down the sideline with Fort Stockton's defenders having no chance to catch him.
"That was a big momentum changer," Alvizo said. "That got us all excited and pumped."
Lake View's defense forced three turnovers with Roman Garcia intercepting a pass and Jay Roman recovering a fumble.
Offensively, Lake View failed to pick up a first down on its first three drives, but the Chiefs scored the next five times they touched the ball.
"We just listened to the motivation our coaches gave us and trusted in each other," Alvizo said of overcoming the rough start. "We started to calm down and relax, and we all came together as one."
Lake View head coach Hector Guevara was happy with the win, but he also saw areas that needed improvement, including too many penalties.
"We started off slow, so we've got to improve on that," Guevara said. "We've still got a lot of things to improve on. The ball bounced our way tonight, but we've got to keep working."
Lake View’s win snapped a six-game losing streak against Fort Stockton.
The Chiefs will play at Snyder and Lamesa the next two weeks before returning home to play Lubbock High on Friday, Sept. 19.
"It feels great," Johnson said. "We put in a lot of work at practice. We made sure we came in and determined and played as a team. Right now, we're feeling good, and I'm hoping the season keeps going like this."
Fort Stockton was led by running back Nick Almendarez, who had 17 carries for 123 yards.
