UPDATE: Police Standoff Ends With Suspect in Custody

SAN ANGELO, TX — A suspect is in custody after a police standoff Thursday afternoon in San Angelo.

San Angelo Police Department Chief of Police Travis Griffith addressed the media at about 4 p.m. after the suspect, Joshua Showels, 34, was arrested following an incident in which he barricaded himself in a home in the 300 block of East 8th Street.

Griffith said officers were preparing to serve a warrant in connection to a domestic abuse call from Wednesday night that involved charges of aggravated assault family violence strangulation, and aggravated assault family violence deadly weapon.

"The victim had separated from the suspect, and we tried multiple avenues to bring it to a peaceful conclusion," Griffith said. "Upon contact with the suspect, it became apparent it was not something where he was going to go willingly."

Officers eventually deployed chemical agents — commonly referred to as gas, Griffith said — which allowed the officers to enter the home and detain the suspect peacefully. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment of heat exhaustion.

A Nixle alert was sent about 1:30 p.m. advising the public to avoid the area of 7th and Main streets because of police activity, and several roads in the area were shut down during the ordeal.
