Abbott Expands Special Session Agenda With Election, Law Enforcement Items

AUSTIN, TX — Gov. Greg Abbott on Monday added new items to the Texas Legislature’s Special Session #2 agenda, focusing on election security and law enforcement.

Abbott directed lawmakers to consider legislation prohibiting same-day voter registration in Texas. He also called for legislation authorizing sheriffs and constables to contract for law enforcement services, along with measures addressing the appropriation or transfer of funds to or from law enforcement agencies.

The announcement follows Abbott’s Aug. 20 expansion of the agenda, when he added three other items: penalties for legislators who deliberately absent themselves from a session, authorization for Texans to purchase Ivermectin at pharmacies, and a groundwater study of East Texas aquifers by the Texas Water Development Board.

The governor said the measures are intended to improve public safety and strengthen election security.
