DPS Launches Operation CARE for Fourth of July Holiday

AUSTIN, TX — The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is increasing highway patrol efforts statewide as part of Operation CARE (Crash Awareness Reduction Effort) from July 3 through July 6 to ensure safer roads during the Fourth of July holiday.

Operation CARE focuses on identifying drivers who are speeding, impaired, or failing to follow Texas’ Move Over, Slow Down law, among other violations.

“The Fourth of July is a time to celebrate our freedoms with family and friends, but safety must come first,” said Texas Highway Patrol Chief Bryan Rippee. “Whether you’re on the road, on the water or handling fireworks, make smart choices that protect you and those around you.”

In 2024, DPS Troopers issued more than 59,000 citations and warnings, including:

  • 5,178 for speeding

  • 1,581 for no insurance

  • Over 335 for seat belt or child restraint violations

They also arrested 212 people for DWI and 250 on felony charges.

DPS Safety Tips for July 4th Travel and Celebrations

Driver Safety:

  • Never drink and drive. Use a designated driver or ride-share service.

  • Move Over or Slow Down for emergency vehicles, TxDOT workers, and tow trucks.

  • Buckle up all passengers — it’s the law.

  • Slow down in poor conditions or unfamiliar areas.

  • Avoid distractions. Using a phone to text or email while driving is illegal unless the vehicle is stopped.

  • Drive defensively, especially in holiday traffic.

  • Use the left lane for passing only. Texas law requires slower traffic to keep right.

  • Be mindful of large trucks and give them ample space.

  • If you can steer it, clear it. In a non-injury crash, move the vehicle off the roadway if possible.

  • Save this number: 1-800-525-5555 for Texas Roadside Assistance.

  • Maintain your vehicle and secure any cargo.

  • Report suspicious activity or hazards to law enforcement.

  • Check weather and road conditions at DriveTexas.org.

Fireworks Safety:

  • Light fireworks outdoors and away from flammable materials.

  • Keep a bucket of water or hose nearby.

  • Supervise children closely; never let young children handle fireworks.

  • Only light one firework at a time; do not relight “duds.”

  • Soak used fireworks before disposal.
