COLLEGE STATION, TX — Four schools from the Concho Valley will participate in the 7-on-7 state tournament this week in College Station.
It’s probably no coincidence that all four teams have a returning starter at quarterback leading the way.
Brady’s Sean Jacoby, Junction’s Chasen Doyal, Sonora’s Aaron Segura and Eldorado’s JonnieRae Adame have all played at least one season as their team’s starting QB.
That kind of experience is as important as ever in the passing-focused 7-on-7 game.
All four Concho Valley schools will begin play Thursday in the 32-team Division III tournament at Veterans Memorial Park.
For Jacoby, this will be his second time leading the Bulldogs to state in 7-on-7, and he’s heading into his third year as Brady’s starter this fall.
“The growth that Sean has had athletically, mentally, from a leadership standpoint, it’s been tremendous for us,” Brady head coach Jaron Roberts said. “He took a big step last year from his sophomore season to his junior season, and we’re seeing it even more from his junior season to his senior season.”
Jacoby helped Brady go 8-3 last fall, a five-win improvement from a year earlier.
The Bulldogs went 2-2 at the state 7-on-7 tournament last summer, with a loss in the first round of elimination play.
“A lot of those kids are returning. We had a younger team last year, and they’re excited about going back down there,” Roberts said. “They get to match up with some teams we don’t always see. You hear about these perennial powers and these great programs across the state, and I think our kids are really excited just to have the opportunity to see what those teams are about.”
Brady will compete in Pool D with Rio Vista, Kenedy and Haskell.
Surrounding Jacoby will be playmakers like Ashton Taylor (an 1,100-yard rusher last season), Elijah Stark and Ethan Bernal. Roberts said linebacker Johnny Roque has been leading the defense.
For Junction, the Eagles will be making their first-ever trip to the 7-on-7 state tournament, but they’re heading in with a tidal wave of momentum after last year’s breakthrough 12-2 season in the fall, which included their first district title in 21 years.
“I think there’s a lot of excitement around the program right now,” Junction head coach Scott Freeman said. “The boys are pumped to go to College Station. We have a lot of Aggies around here, so anytime they get to go to College Station they’re excited. I think the biggest thing is going and competing against some teams we really haven’t seen in the past. And it’s just one step closer to the fall for us.”
Junction is competing in Pool B against East Bernard, Hearne and Kountze.
Doyal is directing a Junction offense with targets that include All-Cover 1 standout brothers Koda and Brock Bierschwale, along with their cousin, tight end Bode Bierschwale. Hunter Dale and Grant Simons give the Eagles a vertical threat.
Sonora is making its third straight trip to the 7-on-7 state tournament.
The Broncos are again led by Aaron Segura, who first took the reins of the offense last summer before becoming the team’s full-time starter as a sophomore in the fall.
His corps of receivers is led by 6-foot-4, 240-pound junior tight end Evan Arredondo.
Sonora is competing in Pool H with Lexington, Sunray and Wallis Brazos.
Eldorado is making its first appearance at the 7-on-7 state tournament since 2021.
Adame helped the Eagles reach the playoffs last fall, and his progression has continued this summer.
Garrett Walling is anchoring Eldorado’s defense.
Eldorado is in Pool A with Bosqueville, Grapeland and Poth.
After pool play Thursday, teams will enter the elimination round Friday.
