"Credible" Threats Made Against Texas Lawmakers

AUSTIN, TX — Texas lawmakers face credible threats to their lives, reports the Texas DPS. At 1 p.m. today, DPS released a statement warning that there was an "active law enforcement event" at the Texas Capitol, 1100 Congress Ave. in Austin. 

DPS stated the threat was towards state legislators attending today's No Kings protest at the Capitol. Moments later, the Texas House Administration Chairman Charlie Geren (R, Fort Worth) emphasized the threat, adding that the House is working with law enforcement partners and "leveraging all available resources to address this threat."

Geren reminded fellow lawmakers that this morning two Minnesota lawmakers were attacked at their homes by a suspect dressed as a police officer. 

According to reports coming from Minnesota, Minnesota House Democratic leader Melissa Hortman and her husband were fatally shot in their home, and Minnesota State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife survived the assassin’s attack at their home. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said both attacks appeared to be a targeted act of political violence. A manhunt is underway for a suspect who impersonated law enforcement.

Our State Rep. Drew Darby (R, San Angelo) reported that he is safe. He did not say if he was in his district or at the Capitol today and we didn't ask.

Organized protests across the country are happening intended to oust President Donald Trump. Presumptions are the threats are against Democrat lawmakers, however, DPS did not specify party affiliation.
