Details of High-Speed Chase Revealed, Further Charges Possible

A traffic stop that led to a high-speed chase ended with three being sent to jail on Tuesday night for both evading arrest and warrants.

At 10:52 p.m., on Sept. 29, Officer C. Barker attempted to make a traffic stop on a white 1997 Ford Taurus for failing to signal in the 1600 block of Beacon Street. When Officer Barker activated his emergency lights at the intersection of La Follette Street and Bell Street, the vehicle accelerated and actively evaded from the traffic stop.

The vehicle pursuit went west from this location until the driver lost control of the vehicle at 7th and Chadbourne and crashed. Two males and one female exited the vehicle. The driver, 30-year-old Jonathan Escobedo, and the female passenger, 30-year-old Christina Dumaran-Alvarez, were taken into custody. Escobedo and Dumaran-Alvarez were transported to Shannon Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries and released.

The male passenger fled the scene on foot. A perimeter was quickly established in the area. K9 units responded to assist in locating the male subject. K9 Sgt C. Cimino deployed Police Service Dog Vader. PSD Vader was able to successfully track the male subject to the 900 block of MLK where he was taken into custody. The male subject was identified as 43-year-old Ruben Ortiz.

All three subjects were arrested and transported to the Tom Green County Jail. Escobedo was charged with evading in a motor vehicle. Ortiz was charged with Evading on Foot and an outstanding County Warrant for Theft. Dumaran-Alvarez was arrested for a parole violation warrant.

During the investigation a handgun was located on the ground near the suspect vehicle. The gun was seized as part of the investigation.

Detective Matt Hawthorne is the lead investigator for this incident. Further charges may be forth coming pending further investigation. There is no other information available for release at this time.
