WATCH: Daring Rescue of Man and His Dog from Apartment Inferno

ABILENE, TX — A grease fire at an Abilene apartment complex led to the daring escape of a man and his dog early Tuesday afternoon.

A video of the dog owner getting his large Labrador Retriever out of a second story window as flames engulfed the only exit door to his apartment showed the dramatic events. After the dog was safely on the ground, the man in the second floor disappeared back into the apartment briefly, causing concern of those below.

The fire started when a resident of an apartment downstairs from where the man and dog lived accidentally started a grease fire. She said she was cooking French fries in a pan of grease. The fire spread quickly engulfing the entrances to several apartment units.

During video of the rescue, the sirens of the arriving Abilene Fire Department are audible.

As the man was attempting to guide the dog onto a ladder below the second story window, the man's grip of his dog slipped and the dog fell about 10 feet to the ground. The dog appeared to be uninjured later in the video.

After a short period of time, the dog's owner also escaped down the ladder without incident.

The fire happened at 1:45 p.m. at the Wind Chase Apartments in the 2400 block of Buffalo Gap Rd. in Abilene. The witness who filmed the ordeal did not want to be identified.
