AUSTIN, TX — Gov. Greg Abbott announced Monday that 411 Texas school systems will receive a combined $40 million through the Preparing and Retaining Educators through Partnerships (PREP) Program Allotment to strengthen teacher recruitment, preparation and mentorship.
The funding is intended to help school districts recruit qualified educators, improve teacher preparation programs and provide mentorship opportunities for teachers entering the classroom.
“Texas educators shape future generations, and it is critical that they enter the classroom ready to succeed,” said Governor Abbott. “This investment empowers schools and builds on Texas’ efforts to ensure that every student has access to a high-quality education.”
The PREP Program Allotment was established under House Bill 2, which was passed by the 89th Texas Legislature and signed into law by Abbott in June 2025.
The legislation provided $8.5 billion in new public education funding, including investments in teacher recruitment, preparation and retention.
“Strong teachers are the foundation of student success, and the PREP Allotment gives Texas school systems the resources to build a stronger educator pipeline,” said Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath. “This investment will help districts recruit talented candidates, provide meaningful preparation and mentorship, and support more educators as they begin their careers.”
The Texas Education Agency administers the PREP Allotment, which supports partnerships aimed at preparing educators for the classroom and helping school systems retain teachers.
A complete list of participating school systems and additional program information is available on the Texas Education Agency's PREP Allotment webpage.
